01 · Overview
What Prolific is
Prolific connects researchers with paid participants for online studies. Most of the work is academic surveys and experiments, alongside AI-related tasks such as rating and annotating model outputs. Studies are short, paid per completion and held to a minimum hourly rate based on estimated time. Access is limited to supported countries, and new sign-ups usually join a waitlist.
Commitment. None required. Studies run from a few minutes to over an hour, and you take them whenever they appear. Longitudinal studies ask you to return at set intervals. The limit is usually how many studies are available, not your schedule.
02 · The work
What you would actually do
- 01Complete academic surveys and behavioral experiments
- 02Take part in multi-part (longitudinal) studies over days or weeks
- 03Rate, compare and annotate AI model outputs
- 04Write or review prompts and responses on some AI research projects
03 · Pay & payouts
What it pays, and how
Pay range
From $8/hr
USD, before fees and tax
Paid via
When you are paid. On demand. A reward joins your balance once the researcher approves your submission. Researchers have a review window, after which pending submissions are typically auto-approved. You can then cash out to PayPal once your balance passes the minimum.
Each study pays a fixed reward for an estimated completion time, sometimes with bonuses. Prolific's researcher guidance, as last known (2024-2025), sets a minimum of £6.00 / $8.00 per hour of estimated time and recommends £9.00 / $12.00. Confirm these figures are still current. The floor applies to the estimate, so if you take longer than estimated, your effective hourly rate falls. AI tasks are priced study by study. Overall earnings depend mostly on how many studies match your profile.

04 · Who gets in
Requirements and difficulty
Open
1 / 4
Most applicants who meet the basics get in.
- 18 or older
- Residence in a supported country, without using a VPN
- Phone and identity verification during onboarding (a photo ID check has been reported for new accounts; steps may differ by country)
- A PayPal account that can receive payments
- A computer for many studies; some studies also accept mobile devices
- One account per person, with accurate profile answers
05 · How to get in
From sign-up to first paid task
- 1
Check eligibility
Confirm that your country of residence is on Prolific's supported list in the participant help center.
- 2
Sign up and join the waitlist
Register from Prolific's participant page. New sign-ups usually join a waitlist and are invited when researchers need people with their profile. There is no guaranteed timeline.
- 3
Activate your account
When invited, verify your email and phone number, complete any identity verification and accept the terms.
- 4
Complete your About You profile
Answer the prescreening questions fully and honestly. They decide which studies you are shown.
- 5
Link PayPal
Connect a PayPal account that can receive funds so you can cash out.
- 6
Take studies
Reserve a place in a study from your dashboard, complete it and submit your completion code. The reward is credited when the researcher approves your submission.
06 · Tips
How to get accepted and stay active
- 01
Answer every About You question carefully and keep it current. Contradictions between your profile and your answers in a study can be flagged.
- 02
Read instructions in full and take attention checks seriously; rushed work invites rejections.
- 03
Write free-text answers yourself. Researchers can reject answers that look pasted or AI-generated, and AI tools should not be used unless a study asks for them.
- 04
If you cannot complete a study properly, return it instead of submitting. Returns are not counted as rejections; rejections lower your approval rate.
- 05
Protect your approval rate: many researchers restrict studies to participants with strong approval histories.
- 06
If a rejection seems unfair, message the researcher through Prolific with specifics. Prolific support can step in when a rejection breaks its rules.
- 07
Never use a VPN, share an account or open a second one; any of these can get you permanently removed.

07 · The verdict
The good and the not so good
Strengths
- Enforced minimum hourly reward, with pay and time estimates shown before you start
- No minimum hours; studies fit around other commitments
- Simple PayPal cash-outs once you pass a small minimum
- Returning a study you cannot finish does not count as a rejection
- Strong reputation with universities and AI researchers
Drawbacks
- Limited to supported countries; most African countries are excluded
- New sign-ups usually join a waitlist with no guaranteed timeline
- Study supply is unpredictable and popular studies fill quickly, so it works best as supplementary income
- Effective hourly pay drops when a study takes longer than estimated
- The minimum rate is modest by UK and US wage standards
- Cash-outs go through PayPal, which is a barrier where PayPal is restricted
08 · In Africa
Some African countries or projects
South Africa has historically been supported as an exception to the OECD-based list; confirm on the live list. As far as we know, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Egypt are not supported. Prolific checks location, and using a VPN to get around this breaks its terms and can lead to removal and lost earnings. Cash-outs also require a PayPal account that can receive funds.
Where it hires. Supported countries only. Historically this has meant most OECD member countries (for example the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and much of the EU), with a few OECD members excluded, plus South Africa. Prolific publishes the current list in its participant help center; it was not re-verified for 2026.
09 · Questions
Prolific, answered
Can I join Prolific from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or Egypt?
Not as far as we know. Prolific accepts participants only from supported countries, historically most OECD members plus South Africa, and it checks location. Using a VPN to get around this breaks Prolific's terms and can lead to removal and lost earnings.
Does South Africa qualify?
South Africa has historically been on Prolific's supported list. Confirm in the participant help center before signing up, since the list can change.
How much can I earn?
Each study shows a fixed reward and an estimated time. As last known, Prolific requires researchers to pay at least £6 / $8 per hour of estimated time and recommends £9 / $12. Total earnings depend on how many studies match your profile, so it works best as a supplement rather than a main income.
How do I get paid?
Approved rewards collect in your Prolific balance, and you cash out to PayPal once you pass the minimum. Researchers approve submissions within a review window. If they do not act, pending submissions are typically auto-approved.
Why am I on a waitlist?
Prolific admits new participants when researchers need people with their profile. There is no guaranteed timeline. Keep your sign-up details accurate and watch for an invitation email.
