01 · Overview

What TELUS Digital AI Community is

TELUS Digital AI Community is the contributor network behind TELUS Digital's AI data business, built on the former Lionbridge AI. Independent contractors work on country- and language-specific projects such as rating search results and ads, checking map data, evaluating AI responses and collecting speech or image data. It suits people who want ongoing part-time rating work and are prepared to study for a demanding guidelines exam.

Commitment. Part-time and flexible within project limits. Rater roles are usually ongoing contracts with weekly hour expectations or caps stated in the listing. Data-collection projects are short and one-off. There is no single platform-wide minimum.

02 · The work

What you would actually do

  1. 01Rate the relevance and quality of search results and ads for your market
  2. 02Verify and improve online map and local business data
  3. 03Evaluate and compare generative-AI responses against written guidelines
  4. 04Record speech, photo or video samples for data-collection projects
  5. 05Transcribe, translate and annotate text and audio

When you are paid. Reported as monthly for hourly rater roles: you submit an invoice for the previous month's hours and payment follows some weeks later. Data-collection projects may pay on their own schedule. Your contract sets the method and timing, and both can depend on your country.

Many rater and evaluator roles are paid by the hour: you log your time and invoice it. Data-collection projects are often paid per task or per batch. Rates are set per project and per country and are stated in the listing or contract. There is no public rate card. Contributor reports suggest rates in lower-income markets are well below US rates, so check the rate for your own country before you put time into the exam. No verified figures are given here.

04 · Who gets in

Requirements and difficulty

Assessed

2 / 4

A qualification test decides, so preparation pays off.

  • 18 or older
  • Residence in the country the role is for, often for a stated number of consecutive years
  • Fluency in the role's language and familiarity with local culture, news and media
  • Your own computer and reliable internet; some roles also require a specific type of smartphone or active use of particular online services
  • A pass in the project's qualification exam
  • An independent-contractor agreement (you handle your own taxes); identity verification may also be required

05 · How to get in

From sign-up to first paid task

  1. 1

Find a role for your market

Browse the AI Community job board and filter by country and language. Each listing is for one market, so apply only to roles for the country where you live. Some listings and portal pages may still carry the older TELUS International name.

  2. 2

    Apply and complete your profile

Submit the application and fill in your contributor profile: contact details, languages, education and relevant experience. Some roles add a short screening or language check.

  3. 3

    Wait for an invitation

Shortlisted applicants receive an email with the project guidelines and a link to the qualification exam. Applicants report waits of days to weeks, and some never hear back.

  4. 4

Study for and take the exam

The exam is typically open-book and in several parts. It combines questions on the guidelines with practical rating tasks and must be finished within a set window.

  5. 5

    Contract and verification

Sign the independent-contractor agreement and confidentiality terms, complete any identity checks, and set up payment and tax details.

  6. 6

    Onboard and start tasking

Get access to the work tools, complete any onboarding, and begin tasks under ongoing quality review. Log hours accurately and invoice on schedule.

06 · Tips

How to get accepted and stay active

  1. 01

Read the full guidelines end to end before opening the exam, then again with notes. Open-book does not mean easy: know the rating scales well enough that you only need the document for edge cases.

  2. 02

Focus on the boundaries between rating levels and on the worked examples, where the judgment calls are hardest.

  3. 03

Plan as if you get one attempt and the invitation expires. Take the exam in a quiet, uninterrupted block well before the deadline.

  4. 04

Apply only for your real country and languages, and never use a VPN. Your location and identity may be checked during onboarding and while you work.

  5. 05

Check your spam folder throughout the application, because exam invitations and onboarding steps arrive by email.

  6. 06

Once active, log time honestly and invoice on time. Time records can be audited, and misreported hours can end a contract.

  7. 07

Read quality feedback and guideline updates as they arrive. Standards shift, and quality scores can decide whether you keep access.

07 · The verdict

The good and the not so good

Strengths

  • Established operator with a long record in search and AI rating work
  • Ongoing part-time rater contracts can offer steadier hours than task-by-task platforms
  • Recruits across many countries and languages, not only English-speaking markets
  • No fees to apply, fully remote, and flexible scheduling within project limits

Drawbacks

  • Pay depends heavily on country and is reported to be low outside high-income markets
  • Onboarding is slow, and many applicants report never hearing back
  • Openings are intermittent; hours can be capped or reduced when projects change
  • Monthly invoicing and payment are slower than weekly-payout platforms
  • Quality audits are reported to be strict, and some contributors report contracts ending with little explanation
  • Fake job offers using the TELUS name circulate; legitimate roles never charge fees

08 · In Africa

Some African countries or projects

Roles are listed per country and language. In October 2026 an Online Data Analyst role for South Africa was open, for people who have lived there for the last five years; no current openings were confirmed for Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or Egypt. Filter the AI Community job board by your country. If nothing is listed, there is no way in until a role opens. Applying under another country or using a VPN misrepresents your residency, which roles require, and you risk removal.

Where it hires. Global, recruited market by market. Each role is tied to a specific country and usually a language, and you can apply only to roles for the country where you live. Openings have historically covered many countries and languages, but the set of open markets changes constantly, so check the job board for your country.

Never use a VPN or someone else's identity to get around a country restriction. Platforms verify identity and location, and accounts caught doing it are closed, often with unpaid earnings.

09 · Questions

TELUS Digital AI Community, answered

Is TELUS Digital AI Community the same as Lionbridge AI?

Effectively, yes. TELUS International bought Lionbridge AI in a deal completed at the end of 2020 and folded its contributor crowd into the TELUS International AI Community. That community has operated under the TELUS Digital name since the company's 2024 rebrand. Some listings and portal pages may still use the older names.

Can I apply from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa or Egypt?

Only to roles listed for your country. TELUS recruits market by market and openings come and go. In October 2026 an Online Data Analyst role for South Africa was open; we could not confirm current openings in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or Egypt. Filter the AI Community job board by your country and language. If nothing is listed, wait for a role to open rather than applying under another country.

How much does it pay?

Rates are set per project and country and are stated in the listing or contract. Rater roles are usually hourly; data-collection tasks are often paid per task. Contributor reports suggest rates outside high-income markets are well below US rates.

When and how am I paid?

Hourly roles are reported to be invoiced monthly, with payment some weeks later. Methods depend on your country; Payoneer and bank transfer are the methods reported. Your contract states the method and schedule.

Do I need to pay to apply or take the exam?

No. Legitimate TELUS Digital roles do not charge fees. Treat any request for payment, or any offer of exam answers, as a scam.
